Let’s Break Down Why We Don’t Wax

Discover the Best Alternative to Waxing in San Diego, CA

The search for a reliable hair removal treatment has its challenges. Each person has their own unique preferences and goals, but at Swanky Sugar, we find that sugaring is an all-around crowd-pleaser for numerous reasons. Sugaring and waxing share the same goal, but there are some key differences with sugaring that make it truly special—allow us to explain.

Why We Sugar Instead of Wax

Wax is applied to the skin at temperatures upwards of 130 degrees (often times much hotter!), whereas sugar paste is only heated to body temperature to make it soft and pliable. With strip wax as well as hard wax, the product is removed in the opposite direction of growth. This can cause the hair to break off at the surface of the skin, resulting in immediate regrowth, and no reduction of density. Sugar paste is flicked in the natural direction of growth, which maintains the health and integrity of the hair follicle. Successfully removing the hair from the root while it is still attached to the dermal papilla will cause damage to the growth site and permanently reduce the strength of the hair. Wax products also contain a long list of ingredients, which can cause allergic and chemical reactions in the skin. Sugar paste is totally organic, so it is kind to the skin and the planet!

Why Sugaring is So Sweet

At Swanky Sugar, we prioritize a totally comfortable hair removal experience. Because we apply a low-heat product that only clings to dead skin and hair, you’ll only feel the flick as it’s happening—no lingering sting or sensitivity. After each treatment, we perform the appropriate aftercare to ensure you leave the spa with happy skin.

Your Waxing Questions Answered

Bikini line wax and Brazilian wax (the sugaring version of course!) are two of our most popular hair removal services, both of which remove pubic hair. Removing pubic hair at home can be very tricky, messy business. Sugaring this area – whether you choose to clean up the sides, clear out the cheeks, or go full Monte, is a quick way to take the task off your plate. Not to mention you will have a permanent reduction in hair growth over time, making the discomfort of thick, coarse pubic hair a non-issue.

While hair growth rates vary slightly from person to person, here’s what we tend to see with the vast majority of our clients: You can expect about 2 weeks of smooth skin, followed by 2 weeks of light growth. By the time you get to 4 weeks post-sugar, about 1/3 of your hair has grown to about 1/4″ in length, and it’s ripe for the picking.

With waxing, you may see more regrowth, and sooner, due to breakage caused by removing the hair in the opposite direction of growth.

A Brazilian wax (sugar) removes hair from your entire intimate area—front to back, side to side, and everything in between. Because the skin here is more sensitive and prone to ingrown hairs, Brazilian sugar wax is a highly recommended hair removal method!

Of course, there are also a few variations of Brazilian sugar wax—we’ve outlined the different options below:

Bikini – This treatment includes removal of hair from the happy trail, and the top and sides of the bikini.

Modified – This treatment includes removal of hair from the happy trail, top and sides of the bikini, plus the back side between the cheeks.

Brazilian – This treatment includes removal of hair from the happy trail to the tail. Clients may opt to leave a strip, triangle, or custom shape on the mound, or take it all!

Sugaring preserves a healthy hair follicle while still removing hair at the root. Over time, hair will grow back thinner, finer, and softer.
